Youth For Unity And Voluntary Action (YUVA)

One of the open spaces in the resettlement colony of Lallubhai Compound, Mankhurd, in Mumbai, was an abandoned site. People in the neighbourhood avoided this space, especially the younger children. However, it has now been transformed into a safe, green sanctuary that women and children love to spend time in.

In a bustling city like Mumbai, finding and developing open spaces that are accessible to all can be quite a challenge. YUVA has been able to overcome initial hurdles such as acquiring necessary permissions and gaining consensus among various stakeholders, working hand-in-hand with children and community members at every stage. With careful planning, today we've got a user-friendly community space, which is well-maintained and is a valuable resource for all.


The effects are evident too! From the enhanced physical and emotional development of the children to the strengthened community ties among women, this initiative offers a model of how safe inclusive community spaces can be nurtured and grown. We're thrilled to see the impact of our efforts and want to set up 3 more community spaces for vulnerable children and their families in Mumbai.
